A lot of people wonder why Ahmedabad is called the Manchester of India. Being one of the most industrialised and commercial centres in the western part of India, it was earlier the capital of Gujarat. Now it is present at a distance of 30 Km from the current capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar along the banks of the Sabarmati river.
In England, Manchester is well renowned for its cotton textiles, and its temperate climate is well-fitting for the spinning of cotton thread. Manchester is situated along the banks of Mersey River and is best suited for drying cotton threads. Speaking of Ahmedabad, it has excellent climatic conditions for growing and spinning cotton thread. It has lots of textile mills and thereby it is the number one choice when it comes to companies dealing with cotton textiles. Cotton is imported to Ahmedabad from the port of Kandla, and the completed products are exported to countries across the globe.
Since Ahmedabad is located in a cotton-producing region, it developed into a cotton textile manufacturer hub. It implies that raw staple cotton is persistently present to the textile mills over there. The textile trade looks promising because of the surplus abundance of skilled and unskilled labour from the surrounding regions. The wealthy entrepreneurs of Gujarat supplied the money to develop the textile mills. Further, as a connected city, Ahmedabad transports the finished goods everywhere all across the country as well as to foreign nations as well. The perennial supply of electricity also helped in developing the cotton textile industry of Ahmedabad by leaps and bounds.
After the setup of the first textile mill (Shahpur Mill) in the year 1861, it tasted great success, and this motivated many to set up more textile mills in the city. By the turn of the 20th century, there were 33 textile mills, and the town found itself supplying cotton textiles all over India. The country's leading industrialists Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Ambalal Sarabhai were the ones who used the name Manchester of India for Ahmedabad.
At present, the city manufactures all types of cotton textiles. Denim cloth that gets made over here is used by the top designer brands from all over the world. Ahmedabad based textiles are also prevalent due to their high quality all around the globe.
